Drone footage for weddings is a very appealing idea these days, and in fact a trendy one. There appear to be more and more stories or examples of excellent wedding photos and videos captured via drones, which can get in and out of the action without really disrupting proceedings. Furthermore, as a pilot (and even more so if you’re a friend of the happy couple’s), it’s a great honor to be trusted with this kind of occasion.
Still, shooting a wedding ceremony and/or reception via drone isn’t always straightforward. And particularly if the couple is hosting a destination wedding, there are things you’ll want to keep in mind.
Has The Country Banned Drones?
The last thing you want is to agree to shoot drone footage of a destination wedding, travel to that destination, and then inadvertently break a law by doing your job. Unfortunately, there are numerous countries that have banned drone footage, or at least restricted it. So just make sure you take a look at an updated list or map before the actual trip.
Has The Venue?
Some venues also restrict drone usage even if the countries they’re in do not. For instance, consider a recent article highlighting worldwide casino venues ideal for destination weddings. Pointing to Hard Rock Punta Cana, the Sands Macau, and Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, the article made some great points about the appeal of such destinations. However, it’s also known that some casinos restrict certain kinds of footage. Based on this example, you should look into venue policies as well as country policies.
Are You Charging Enough?
You may not want to think of things in these terms if you’re excited about the opportunity to shoot, and especially not if you’re close with the couple getting married. However the reality is that drone footage is fast becoming a fairly competitive space, and it’s best to get your money’s worth! As one write-up on the subject put it, a videographer can charge based on his expertise and skill level, and it’s best to act accordingly.
Have You Practiced?
Finally there’s this simple but vital question: have you actually practiced having your drone out in open space taking photos and videos of the ground (and people) below? If not, it’s absolutely imperative to do so before the wedding, because it can give you an idea, fairly quickly, of the exciting shots you can set up. And as with most any other venture in life, practice makes perfect!
