As of 30th May 2018 a new law came into effect with regard to the operation of drones. This law has been passed to ensure that all drone users use their drones within safe limits.
July 2018
From the 30th July 2018, drones are not allowed to fly higher than 400 feet or within 1 kilometre of an airport boundary. This is because there has been an increase in the number of incidents involving planes and helicopters. The government want to make sure that these incidents decrease to protect the safety of the crew and passengers in aircraft flying at low altitude.
Other Laws
Other laws also to come effect shortly will also make it obligatory for drone operators to register with the Civil Aviation Authority if they operate drones weighing 250 grams or more. While some drones weigh less than this amount, most drones with a camera attached are this weight or more.
A further requirement came into force in September 2019 was that drone pilots will have to take an online safety teat before they can legally launch a drone for pleasure or business purposes.
Failure to Comply
If a drone pilot fails to adhere to the law regarding height, they can be charged with endangering an aircraft or any people in an aircraft. This can lead to a fine and/or a prison sentence. There will also be a fine of up to £1,000 for failing to sit the test or register with the CAA.
