Roadworthy – Life on Two Wheels Documentary
Roadworthy – Life On Two Wheels features the varied stories of the members of the Dundee Wheelers Cycling Club, from those pushing themselves to become fitter and faster to those who take part mainly for the social benefits of cycling in a group.
Filmed over the course of 6 months at various locations across Scotland including the clubs yearly coast-to-coast from Dundee to Oban.
Dundee Wheelers Cycling Club
Establised in 1971 through a merger of the Dundee Roads and Forfarshire clubs. Today it is the largest club in the Dundee area and enjoys a reputation for its friendliness and the welcome it gives to riders of all ages and abilities. A number of members race at local and national level and others cycle for purely recreational purposes.
Why we made it?
Initially Rising View was approached by 81 Films, another video production company in Dundee to help out with a cycling project for the NHS.
Dale Summerton from Rising View is a member of the Dundee Wheelers Cycling Club and asked them for help to practice some shots as capturing moving cyclists can be difficult. Jim Barrie one of the club members agreed and we made a short trailer.
As a thank you to the Wheelers both Rising View and 81 Films agreed to make another short film of their yearly coast-to-coast ride. Steve Soave (81 Films) who has never been a cyclist himself was very interested in why people would ride such a long distance and also the different stories of why each of them did it. We carried on filming more events and numerous interviews with different members of the club which was produced into the documentary.
How We Filmed
Capturing a moving pack of cyclists is very difficult. Firstly you need to get ahead of the group and then wait for them to come and capture them as they speed past at around 20mph or more. Trying to film close up is dangerous as there are other road users and also lots of the roads are narrow as they are in the countryside.
To overcome this we modified the Rising View can so that the back window was removed to capture close up shots of the front of the group. We also attached a stabilised camera on a gimbal to the front window of the van which could remotely be moved from inside the van to capture shots from behind. The van also had a side door so we were able to film from here as we drove past the group.
Drone video was a big part of the documentary also as it took in not only the cyclists but also the amazing Scottish scenery including the mountains, rivers and bridges.
81 Films are experts in traditional ground filming and close up shots so we had a huge variety of different angles and footage to make the documentary with.
In the Media
With the release of the extended trailer there has been a lot of excitement about the finished documentary which is due in 2018. The Dundee Courier newspaper featured the documentary in an article here.
We also reached out to Mark Beaumont the record-breaking long-distance cyclist from Dundee who has just broke the Guinness world record for cycling around the world in an amazing time of 78 days, 14 hours, 40 minutes. He watched our extended trailer and said “this is great and very well filmed. Such a useful resource to have so you can attract more members and widen the interest in cycling -it even makes it look like the sun shines all the time!” He also gave us some tips on how to get the finished documentary marketed.
Cycling is getting more popular all the time so there are new cyclists aswell as some of the older generation including their families looking forward to watching.
Release Date
The finished documentary is due sometime in 2018. We have already captured all the video footage and interviews, with it just needing the final edit.
We plan to reach out to cycling networks in Dundee, Angus and Fife including the likes of Visit Scotland, SUSTRANS and Cycling Scotland.
