Task: Provide a short aerial drone video and aerial photography of a large 40 foot Sperm Whale which had washed up on Monifieth Beach on the East Coast of Scotland. This was then used by the media and featured on various news websites and also in print in a number of national newspapers.

This is an aerial drone video of a large 40 foot Sperm Whale which had washed up on Monifieth Beach on the East Coast of Scotland. It had unfortunately died after a rescue mission failed to save the whale.
Rising View captured the Sperm whale using aerial drone video and photography and then this was then used by the media and featured on various news websites and also in print in a number of national newspapers. These included The Sun, The Daily Record, Daily Mirror, The Scotsman, Daily Mail, The Courier and more.
As the whale was out at sea and the area was closed down due to the toxic nature of the body decomposing, aerial photography was the best way to capture the pictures.
It was a very sad job but also very interesting as Sperm Whales are not normally on the East Coast of Scotland as they mainly eat giant squid which are not found in these waters. This was a very rare event.
Scientists from the Scottish Marine Animal Strandings Scheme (SMASS) carried out an autopsy on the whale and say they found no sign of illness or injury. They think that it may just have taken a wrong turn and got stranded on the beach.
The team also removed the whale’s head – in what they believe may be a UK first – to study its brain and rule out any neurological causes for its death.
